It is one of the 5 sooktams, dedicated to Purusha Brahman, in the Vedas.
The Purusha Sooktam gives us the essence of the philosophy of Vedanta, the Vedic tradition, as well as the Bhagavad-gita and Bhagavat Purana. It incorporates the principles of meditation (upasana), knowledge (jnana), devotion (bhakti), and rituals and duties (dharma and karma.
The sama veda begins with praising goddess gayatri.Recital is as per the Kuthuma sakha. This is the correct way of chanting the gayatri mantra.
Translation:
"Let me meditate on the consciousness which awakens the intelligence in my being. Let the consciousness help me meditate on it"

Recitation and aggregation
An alternative approach is to say the starting prayer, and then say the names collected in stanzas (As they were originally said by Bhishma.) Such stanzas are called Shlokas in Sanskrit. The Sahasranama (apart from the initial and concluding prayers) has a total of 108 shlokas.
